Practical Techniques in Soft Tissue Surgery (6 CE)

Howard Seim, III,  DVM, DACVS

Video segments of clinical case material, carefully edited to form a real life experience, are used as a means of delivering the surgical lectures. All video cases are client owned animals and all of the surgical procedures performed are on patients that have come to the Instructor’s hospital. Case selection includes practical soft tissue surgical procedures that many veterinarians are able to perform in their practice. An advantage of this lecture style is that participants are able to see the case actually operated on during the lecture.

Topics will include:

· Surgical Management of GDV

· Anal Sacculectomy: A Novel Approach

· Intestinal Anastomosis—Tips to Make it Easier

· The 4 Ligature Splenectomy

· Surgical Management of Canine Cystic Calculi

· Feline Perineal Urethrostomy: A Novel Approach

· Surgical Management of Brachycephalic Syndrome

· Wound Management Secrets

Oncology Outside The "Ivory Tower" (6 CE)

Sheri Siegel, DVM, DACVR & Kim Cronin, DVM, DACVIM

This session is intended to provide overall guidance related to oncology work-ups based on client’s desires. This will include workups and discussions from the initial presentation and diagnostics to behavior and treatment. This will also include case presentations with the hope of audience participation and interaction.

Opioids, Marijuana and CBD (5 CE)

Morning Session - Alicia Karas, DVM, MS, DACVAA

Oral opioids are used for control of pain and other conditions in veterinary medicine. In this session we will consider the benefits and risks of oral opioids. What is the evidence for effect and how do we know it isn't the placebo effect? Prescribing practices and diversion risk: Where is all that Tramadol actually going? By the way, do you know which non-controlled substance might be finding its way out of the pill pockets and into kids' pockets?

Medical Cannabis? The ABCs of THC and CBD. Suggested indications range from appetite stimulation to analgesia to the "anties" - anti-nausea, anti-seizure, anti-anxiety, and anti-cancer. This session will explore what we know about the therapeutic effects of cannabis and its derivatives, what the veterinarian should understand about products, legalities, and grey zones, and what to do if the pet gets into the owner's stash.

Afternoon Session

Panel discussion with Middlesex County District Attorney, Marian Ryan; Alicia Karas, DVM, MS, DACVAA; Stephanie Kube, DVM, DACVIM (Neurology); Law Enforcement representatives (police-chiefs and narcotics officers); substance abuse expert; and others relative to the drug crisis, drug seekers, diversion, and how to recognize and report.
